50,000 litres of water saved per year?
Five smart investments to reduce water and energy consumption at home
A modern home should not only be comfortable, but also intelligent and resource-efficient. With the right technology, you can reduce both water and energy consumption, lower your running costs and make your home more future-proof.
But how much can you actually save? Here are five investments that can make a noticeable difference to everyday life.
The examples are based on a 140 m² house in Denmark occupied by four people. Actual savings will depend on the condition of the property, existing installations and household consumption patterns.
1. Switch to an energy-efficient heat pump
If you still heat your home using oil or gas, a modern air-to-water heat pump could be one of the most effective investments you can make. It extracts energy from the outside air to heat both your home and your domestic hot water.
Compared with a traditional gas boiler, a heat pump can significantly reduce both energy consumption and heating costs.
Potential savings: DKK 8,000–13,000 per year when replacing an older gas boiler. Savings will depend on factors such as the home’s insulation and energy prices.
2. Optimise your heating with smart temperature controls
Why heat rooms that are not being used? With smart thermostats and intelligent heating controls, you can adjust the temperature to suit your daily routines and needs.
The system can automatically lower the temperature when you are away and ensure a comfortable indoor temperature when you return. Using an app, you can monitor and adjust your heating wherever you are.
This gives you greater control over energy consumption without compromising on comfort.
Potential savings: DKK 1,000–2,500 per year, based on a reduction in heating consumption of approximately 5–10%.
3. Improve insulation and upgrade to energy-efficient windows
Even the most efficient heating system will be less effective if heat escapes through walls, roofs and windows. Improving insulation and installing modern energy-efficient windows can therefore be a worthwhile long-term investment.
A well-insulated home requires less energy to heat in winter and stays cooler in summer. This reduces the need for both heating and cooling, while also creating a more stable indoor climate.
Potential savings: DKK 2,500–7,000 per year by improving the insulation and windows of an older house. Actual savings will depend primarily on the property’s current energy performance.
4. Recover heat with mechanical ventilation and heat recovery
When you open your windows to ventilate your home, some of the heat escapes along with the stale air. A balanced mechanical ventilation system with heat recovery allows you to reuse much of this energy.
The system continuously replaces the indoor air, transferring heat from the extracted air to the fresh air being supplied. This helps maintain a healthier indoor environment without requiring as much energy for heating.
For a well-insulated, airtight 140 m² house, a Danish calculation example indicates a potential net saving of approximately 5,700 kWh per year.
5. Enjoy a smarter shower with Flow Loop
The shower is an obvious place to reduce both water and energy consumption. With Flow Loop, you can enjoy a warm shower with a high level of comfort while using significantly fewer resources.
The technology collects the warm shower water, filters and UV-treats it, and then circulates it back through the shower. This means both the water and the heat are reused while you shower.
An analysis by NIRAS shows that Flow Loop can reduce water consumption by 81.8% and energy consumption by 69% per shower under the conditions studied.
It is a great example of how intelligent technology can make a tangible difference in everyday life – without compromising on comfort.
Potential savings: Approximately 50,000 litres of water and 2,100 kWh of energy per year for a family of four, depending on showering habits and usage.
Small and large investments – with a noticeable impact
The best investments are not necessarily the most visible ones. It is about looking at your home’s overall resource consumption and choosing solutions that deliver value both now and in the long term.
Whether you start with smart heating controls, improve your home’s insulation or invest in a water-recirculating shower, there are plenty of opportunities to make your home more efficient.
