Energy optimization of your home: Sustainability and financial Responsibility

Energy optimization is a key concern for many homeowners, especially when preparing to sell a property or simply aiming to reduce expenses and their environmental footprint. But which measures are both environmentally and financially sustainable? Here, I share my experiences from renovating my own home and offer inspiration for smarter solutions:

Personal experience

When I took ownership of my 1934 house, I made significant efforts to improve the building’s condition. I insulated under the floors and in the attic, replaced old windows with new double glazing, installed a heat pump, and added a new thatched roof. Despite these improvements, the energy consultant rated the house with an energy label “D.”

The consultant suggested further measures to achieve a “C” rating, but upon closer examination, these didn’t seem financially viable.

Insulation can result in a long payback period

For instance, additional insulation costing DKK 10,000 would save only 34 kWh annually, resulting in a payback period of 15–20 years, which is a long time when factoring in compound interest.

Solar collectors priced at EUR 4.690,- would generate 743 kWh annually, but with a similarly bleak payback period. While these measures might have improved the energy rating and potentially increased the house’s marketability, they didn’t make economic sense for me.

Today’s smarter solutions

Fortunately, energy optimization has advanced rapidly, and there are now more efficient and cost-effective measures to significantly reduce energy and water consumption. One example is recirculating shower systems like Flow Loop’s LOOP shower.

In our household, two adults take daily showers, consuming approximately 1,390 kWh of energy and 46 m³ of water annually, over half of our total water usage. A LOOP shower can reduce shower water consumption by up to 80% and energy consumption by 70%. For us, this equates to annual savings of 970 kWh and 37 m³ of water. In other words, a substantial reduction in both costs and CO₂ emissions.

An investment that makes sense

While investing in a LOOP shower requires several years of daily use to fully pay off, it offers many benefits along the way. In addition to direct financial savings, you enjoy a luxurious shower experience with a “rainshower effect” and a beautiful design by a renowned Danish designer. At the same time, you actively contribute to reducing global warming with a CO₂ reduction exceeding the weight of an average person each year.

Choose the right renovation measures

When considering energy renovations for your home, it’s crucial to prioritize measures with a short payback period and clear benefits for both your finances and the environment. A thorough analysis of your home’s energy needs and potential improvements is essential. Modern, smart solutions like the LOOP shower can make a real difference—for your wallet and the planet.
